Future Continuous and Future Perfect

Future Continuous and Future Perfect are more complex future tenses. I have already written posts on their usage and construction. This time I wanted to focus NOT on the sole definition - or - description of these tenses but on the way of illustrating the usage of those structures for students to understand them better. Of course there are millions of other ways of doing that - and this is just yet another one which might actually work for you;)

Ok, since we all know what Future Continuous and Future Perfect are all about let's focus on such a situation:

Imagine that there is a meeting at work tomorrow. It starts at 9.00 and finishes at 10.30. 

If we wanted to use Future Continuous to describe that event we could do it like that:


The meeting will be taking place between 9.00 and 10.30.

or

Don't call me between 9.00 and 10.30 - I'll be having a meeting then.

or 

Tomorrow at 10.00 the meeting will be taking place.

Now let us build some Future Perfect sentences about that event:


The meeting won't have started before 9.00.

or

The meeting will have started by 9.15.

or

Don't call me before 10.30 - the meeting won't have finished by then.

or 

The meeting will have taken place by 11.00

or

At 9.30 the meeting will have been going on for half an hour. (this is Future Perfect Continuous)

And now... try to use Future Continuous or Future Perfect to finish the following sentences:

1. The plane takes off at 5.30 and lands at 9.00. 

By 6.00 the plane .............................................................................. .

Between 5.30 and 9.00 the plane ......................................................... .

By 9.00 the plane .............................................................................. .

2. The concert starts at 10pm and finishes at midnight.

At 11pm the band .............................................................................. .

Before 10pm the band ........................................................................ .

After midnight the concert ................................................................... .

By 11 pm the band ............................................................................. .
